Still have a lot of use left on pencils, most measure over 7, See photos! Rare to find more than 60 piece set! Spectracolors were first made by the Venus Pencil Company, formerly the American Pencil Company.
I have not seen pencil sets greater than 48. Venus was bought by Faber-Castell in 1973 and in turn by Berol in 1994. With the Faber Castell label, the range of colors was expanded to 96.Spectracolors were discontinued around 1999. Sets of 96 colors are most rare.
The Faber Castell pencils were black in color as were the ones made by Berol but the Berol version was renamed Design Spectracolor. After Berol bought the North American Venus labels from Eberhard Faber, the colors and names of the two labels were very similar in North America. For example, both the Spectracolor and Prismacolor labels of the 1990s shared many color names such as green bice, scarlett lake red, warm grey dark, cold grey light among others. Spectracolors are in demand by artists since they are said to blend extremely well.
Spectracolor pencils were first made by Venus which had colored labels, then by Eberhard Faber with black labels. Then by Berol and discontinued circa 1999. It looks like Venus only made 48 colors or maybe 60 colors, and then Eberhard Faber extended it to 96 colors. They also made some watercolor pencils with red labels, extremely rare; I have only encountered a few of them. Many of the color names are very similar to Berol Prismacolors of the time. Some say that Berol made the Spectracolors under contract for Eberhard Faber. Or perhaps, Berol transferred some colors into the Prismacolor product line after it bought out Eberhard Faber. These pencils are much in demand by artists since they are creamy and thus blend well along with bright colors.
Design Spectracolor is a discontinued brand of artist grade colored pencils that was close to Prismacolor in softness, very strong pigment concentration, a little more opaque and colors ranged from brilliant to very good neutrals in a 72 color range. But even if I had, they wouldn't have lasted indefinitely. Snap it up if you see it, they're great and a little less prone to internal breakage than Prismacolor. The item "Design Spectracolor Artist Grade 90 Colored Pencils Set With Black Easel Case" is in sale since Wednesday, August 10, 2016.
