Unused Set 45 Design Spectracolor. A brief and possibly flawed history of Design Spectracolor Pencils at the end of this Details section. These 45 Design Spectracolor pencils were part of a brand new 60 pencil set that we've had in our basement since the mid 1990s. They were removed from their vinyl case so that the case could be cleaned. We decided to dry and sterilize the case in the summer sun which turned out to be a bad idea as the case melted and warped beyond use.Meanwhile someone helped themselves to a handful of the pencils leaving behind what we offer in this listing. The original 60 were numbered 1401 to 1460. The pencil numbers we offer now are as follows, but with the 14 portion of 14xx omitted for brevity's sake. 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09.

These pencils are for the most part in the same condition as when we first removed them from their case brand new. 1404 had its tip broken off completely. 1456 is noticeably shorter than the others. But we cannot rule out the possibility that some of this set may have had a mm or less broken off the very tip. Please examine the tips of the pencils in the first photo to make sure you are ok with them as they appear.

The Eberhard Faber Design Spectracolor pencils were considered among the best artist pencils on the market but were none the less discontinued in 1999. Consensus among artists is that not equivalent has since been offered. Spectracolor pencils were first made by Venus which and had colored labels. Subsequently they were made by Eberhard Faber with black labels. Finally, Berol acquired the manufacturing rights but discontinued them circa 1999. It seems that Venus only made 48 colors.. Possibly 60, whereafter Eberhard Faber extended the total to 96 colors. Many of the color names are very similar to Berol Prismacolors of the time. At Berol made the Spectracolors under contract for Eberhard Faber. Or perhaps, Berol transferred some colors into the Prismacolor product line after it bought out Eberhard Faber.
Though it seems more likely that they snuffed out Desgn Spectracolors to aggrandize their own Berol Prismacolor brand. Bonus item is not described here as it is not guaranteed in any way.
