Terry Ludwig Soft Pastels, Landscape Collection Based on Three Sets

Terry Ludwig hand made soft pastels are the highest quality, highly pigmented and without the high levels of fillers typical of economy and mid-level pastels. They are very soft, and have a smooth, buttery feel in application. The square profile provides flat surfaces for application of color, and corners for drawing finer lines. Each pastel is approximately 1.5 long by. They are hand made, and since pastels this soft crumble and break easily, shapes are not identical.

There are about 136 unbroken pastels, and many more pieces, many of them half or more of a full size pastel. They are photographed in a Richeson "Roz" box which is included. The box has four plastic trays with foam lined slots to hold pastels.

Each tray is 7" wide by just under 16.75" long, has 34 slots about 3.2 long. So, each tray holds a maximum of 68 of these particular pastels. The collection started several years ago with three large sets of Ludwig pastels. One was called the "canyon" or "Southwest" landscape set of 60, if I recall correctly--names have changed so it is no longer available new. One was another set of 60 chosen by a landscape artist--Maggie Price I think.

The third was a larger set of greens. Please note that there is some duplication in the colors, particularly in the greens! The original boxes and color lists are long gone, so I cannot identify the colors by name or tell how many duplicates of colors there are. The box is about 17.25 x 14.5 x 2.75.

It is light weight metal, fastens with two lock snaps, and reinforced at edges and corners. The box is not made for a particular brand of pastels, but of course it works only with pastels of the right approximate thickness, and capacity depends on the length of the pastels. The inner boxes are removable. They are marked with soft pastel dust; the foam liners have lots of dust, and a few are bent or twisted.
